DTU Energy carries out research on advanced fuel cell and electrolysis technologies. Solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells (SOFC and SOECs, respectively) have several characteristics making them very attractive for the future sustainable energy system. They offer very high efficiency in converting between electrical and chemical energy and the same cell can be utilized both as a fuel cell and for electrolysis. When operating in electrolysis mode, surplus electricity from wind can be used to convert CO2 and steam to CO and Hydrogen, which can be upgraded to gaseous or liquid fuels for the transport sector. In this way, the technology can enable a larger fraction of electricity production from fluctuating sources and enable sustainable transport. To play such a role the technology has to be up-scaled and a reliable multi-cell stack technology and multi-stack-module technology developed. This entails work on several subtasks and components; interconnects and interconnect coatings, sealing solutions, improved cells, and finally contact-layers and assembly strategies ensuring mechanical robustness of the stacks. We work on this from a firm knowledge base in functional materials, their synthesis and characterization supplemented by advanced multi-physics modelling. DTU Energy now wishes to strengthen its competences within the area of SOFC/SOEC stacking.

Responsibilities and tasks
The described stack development efforts are carried out in a team. You will be a key player in this team, carrying out specific component and concept development tasks. A key effort will be on analyses of what limits electrical performance and lifetime. The targeted development tasks will go hand in hand with more fundamental research on the functionality of the materials and the details of the chemical end electrochemical processes taking place in the stacks.  Besides above R&D tasks you will be involved in customer related activities and supervision of master’s and PhD students.

Qualifications
  • PhD degree (or equivalent) and more than two years additional research experience.
  • Significant research experience in the field of SOFC. Documented experience in one or more of the following specific areas will be advantageous;
    o Interconnect materials and high temperature corrosion
    o Synthesis of SOFC relevant materials
    o Electrochemical characterization methods
    o Glass and glass ceramic sealing materials
    o Mechanical properties of ceramics     
  • Excellent abilities to collaborate.
  • Documented publication track record within functional materials and SOFC, i.e. peer-reviewed papers and reviewed proceedings.
  • Fluent oral and written English

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The post of research scientist is a permanent post as part of which the employee after a period (of maximum 4 years) transfers to a position as senior research scientist provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and is deemed qualified. The place of work will be DTU Energy, until 2019 at Campus Risø in Roskilde and hereafter at the Campus in Lyngby.
