DTU Energy has a vacant position for a researcher within in-situ X-ray and neutron scattering analysis of functional materials for energy conversion and storage. The successful candidate will be part of the Section for Imaging and Structural Analysis (ISA). ISA focuses on the fundamental understanding of the properties of interfaces and micro-/nanostructures in multiscale granular/porous functional materials for energy applications. The methods applied are centered on the three complementary probes; electrons, X-rays and neutrons and emphasis is on 2D and 3D ex-situ and in-situ advanced imaging and structural analysis. The goal is always to achieve quantitative data from crystal structure, chemical composition and phases, and morphology (microstructure) whether it is bulk, interfaces or surfaces and at multiscale.

The position as researcher is a permanent entry-level position

The research field of the position will be within X-ray and neutron scattering analysis of functional materials for energy conversion and storage with the emphasis on in-situ and in-operando studies linking the structural and crystalline properties to their performance. The type of functional materials will be industrially relevant materials that find applications within e.g. batteries, gas storage and separation or heterogeneous/electro catalysis. Methods will be a broad variety of (synchrotron) X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. 

Responsibilities and tasks
As a researcher, you will play a major role in DTU Energy’s X-ray and neutron analysis activities. Your responsibilities and tasks will be:

  • To further develop our state-of-the art in-situ and in-operando (synchrotron) X-ray diffraction techniques
  • To further develop our state-of-the art in-situ and in-operando (synchrotron) X-ray spectroscopic techniques (EXAFS etc.)
  • To further develop our state-of-the-art in-situ ad in-operando neutron diffraction and scattering techniques
  • Explore the feasibility of new synchrotron X-ray and neutron techniques, such as PDF 
  • Maintaining and developing our in-house suite of X-ray diffractometers and training new users including instructing them in the data analysis
  • Designing and implementing in-situ/in-operando sample environments for synchrotron X-ray, in-house X-ray and neutron scattering setups
  • Initiate new collaborations and projects with colleagues from the relevant technology tracks
  • Contribute to the strategy and long term vision of the ISA section
  • To contribute to DTU Energy’s teaching port folio
  • Train and supervise students at bachelor, master and PhD level.

We expect that you contribute to our existing collaborations with international large scale facilities such as MAX IV and ESS, and that you via your network contribute with new collaboration options. 
Further, we expect that you actively pursue acquiring of external funding and contribute to colleagues’ funding applications.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We expect and give high priority to the following qualifications:

  • A documented track record of publications within the above topics in internationally peer-reviewed journals
  • Documented experience with synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction applying in-situ or in-operando sample environments
  • Experience with a broad suite of the most established data analysis software for diffraction
  • Documented experience with design of sample environments for in-situ/in-operando studies
  • Experience with analysis of structural and chemical/physical properties og functional materials for energy conversion and storage
  • Experience with linking microstructural properties and performance of devices for energy conversion and storage
  • Experience with collaboration in larger international research projects
  • Experience with training and supervision of students
  • Experience with purchase and maintenance of lab-scale X-ray diffraction equipment
  • Experience with writing applications for external funding
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
  • Is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects
  • Well established skills to work in a cross disciplinary international team

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The position as researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
