Departamento de Química, Instituto Universitario de Materiales y Nanotecnología, Universidad De la Laguna
\nIn order to break through the barrier of 80% grid electricity produced from fossil fuels and to establish a path toward fossil fuel-free and sustainable energy, the development of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices using H2 as a flexible energy carrier obtained from renewable sources, is of great interest. In this context, water electrolyzers, fuel cells and regenerative fuel cells stand out for their high efficiency in energy conversion.
\nIn this talk, I will present the results for a series of nanocatalysts prepared to study the reactions occurring at the electrodes of these devices: hydrogen (HER) and oxygen (OER) evolution reactions in electrolyzers and regenerative cells; and oxygen reduction (ORR) in both fuel cells. These nanomaterials will be mainly based on graphene doped with heteroatoms (S, N), or other inorganic compounds such metal carbides and transition metals in their oxidized or reduced form.
\nThe success of the work involves the removal of Pt group metals from the electrocatalyst formulation by the hybridization of phases of different nature at nanoscopic scale, while maintaining their activity values and improving their stability.
