Award for Senior researcher Eugen Stamate, DTU Energy Conversion

Eugene Stamate

On July 4, Senior researcher Eugen Stamate, DTU Energy Conversion, was awarded the 2012 Innovation Prize by the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society. The prize honors research within plasma physics which has demonstrably led to innovative applications or important effects on society.

The topic of Eugen Stamate’s research is the properties of plasmas. Plasma technology is used in many different applications, including surface treatment of materials and for deposition and etching of thin layers in the semiconductor industry. Eugen Stamate received the price for his discovery of two focusing effects which are related to the spatial distribution of the plasma around the electrodes of a plasma system. His discovery has led to a method to create focused ion beams for surface modification and to the development of a new type of mass spectrometer.
