BioComFert

Development of nanoparticles for foliar fertilization

Calcium phosphate nanoparticles applied as water suspension to mitigate soil nutrient depletion.

About the project

The NNF Challenge project BioComFert is an interdisciplinary, collaborative project aiming at developing biocompatible nanoparticles for foliar fertilization of crops.

The problem to be solved is that standard fertilization practices suffer from immobilization of plant nutrients in the soil and thus in a huge waste of resources and energy. The project attempts to bypass the soil barrier by directly applying the fertilisers on plant leaves and taking advantage of the small size of nanoparticles, which allow them penetrating the cuticule without damage, translocate and deliver nutrients at a controlled rate.
